Defamation

In Pakistan, defamation case is a criminal offense under Section 499 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). It states that whoever by words either spoken or intended to be read, or by signs or by visible representations, makes or publishes any imputation concerning any person intending to harm, or knowing or having reason to believe that such imputation will harm, the reputation of such person, is said, except in the cases hereinafter expected, to defame that person. The punishment for defamation can be imprisonment for up to 2 years, or a fine, or both. However, truth can be used as a defense in a defamation case, as well as certain other exceptions such as publications in good faith for public benefit, and fair and accurate reports of proceedings of courts or legislative bodies.
